A DELICIOUS NEW SPRING VEGETABLE
COLZACOLI (RAPE BUDS)
Almost done, colzacoli is most likely going to be the newest vegetable on the market. It is a kind of broccoli made from the rape bud and upper stem. The bud is more compact and thus larger as compared to oilseed rape. We have been aiming at a vegetable for early spring harvest in Northern Europe similar to the Italian ‘rapini’. Colzacoli should be well adapted to machine harvest.
Unknown to most Europeans the buds of oilseed rape can also be used as a tasty vegetable. However those buds are small. Out of crossings between oilseed rape and rapini we have selected an oilseed rape with a larger bud, however, far from the size of a broccoli. This vegetable needs further tests over the next years but we hope marketing can start in 2023.
